We visited on a chilly November evening with the kids, and the moment we stepped inside we were met with the kind of warmth that makes you instantly exhale. It was the warmth of the room itself, the soft glow of lighting reflecting off polished wood, the aroma of comfort food drifting through the air, and the genuine welcome from the staff that made us feel like we were stepping into the home of someone who was truly glad to see us. At Avicolli’s, you are treated like family in the absolute best sense of the word. It is the kind of welcome that makes you relax into your seat, shake off the cold, and immediately start imagining all the delicious possibilities on the menu. Choosing entrees is nearly impossible, because everything is consistently wonderful. While we were still looking at our menus, the kids were quiet but enthusiastically chanting “spaghetti and meatballs!” while Heidi, our fantastic and endlessly patient server, was simply trying to take our drink order. We barely had time to laugh before the garlic knots arrived, warm, tender, beautifully golden, and served with a silky olive oil dipping sauce that we practically inhaled. Johnny polished his plate so thoroughly that I am fairly certain it did not even need to be washed afterward, and Maggie, covered in happy little sauce splatters, announced that she had spaghetti up to her eyeballs. We were also so impressed by Tyler, the busser and runner, who was kind, thoughtful, and wonderfully engaging even when talking with the kids. It takes real heart to do that, and he did it with ease.

We began our meal with two unforgettable appetizers. The calamari was lightly fried to a crisp and delicate texture, tossed with vibrant lightly fried banana peppers and served with a bright and balanced marinara sauce that perfectly complemented every bite. You can also order it with a red chili sauce, which is equally delicious! Our Utica greens were full of flavor, with just the right amount of heat and garlic, a dish that warms you from the inside out. Although we did not order it this time, one of my personal all-time favorites at Avicolli’s is the Long Hot Parmigiana, which features sautéed long hot peppers bathed in rich plum tomato sauce and finished with melted fresh mozzarella. For spice lovers, it is a must order dish that brings an unforgettable kick of heat and comfort.

The kids enjoyed heaping, generous portions of spaghetti topped with a perfect meatball, true classic comfort food served with care and a sauce that tastes like it has been perfected over generations. My Caesar salad was crisp, cold, and bursting with fresh, bright flavor, with a dressing that struck the perfect balance of creaminess and tang. Kyle warmed himself with a cup of Italian wedding soup that was so perfectly seasoned he paused mid spoonful simply to appreciate it. When it came time to choose our entrees, Kyle wrestled between two incredible options. The Pesto Shrimp Tortellini was calling his name with its tender tortellini, plump shrimp, fresh spinach, diced tomatoes, and creamy Alfredo sauce kissed with fragrant pesto and finished with Romano cheese. Ultimately, the nostalgic pull of his all-time favorite won, and he chose the Eggplant Parmesan. It arrived layered with perfectly battered and fried eggplant, enveloped in robust tomato sauce, and topped with Romano and mozzarella that had been baked to melty, bubbly perfection.I considered the luxurious Lobster Ravioli, which features ravioli stuffed with claw and knuckle lobster meat and simmered in a decadent garlic vodka sauce. It is a dish that is both indulgent and comforting, and it was very tempting. In the end I returned to my personal favorite, the Cavatelli with Broccoli and Mushroom. This dish features tender cavatelli tossed with fresh broccoli and sliced mushrooms sautéed in extra virgin olive oil and finished with fresh garlic, white wine, and Romano cheese. I added shrimp, which were cooked perfectly and complemented the dish beautifully. Every bite was a reminder of why I return to this entree time and time again. Dessert was the perfect conclusion to our meal. I ordered my absolute favorite, the Lemon Berry Mascarpone Cake. It is delicate, airy, and bright, the perfect harmony of citrus and berry layered with silky mascarpone. It is one of those desserts that somehow manages to feel both refreshing and indulgent. Kyle ordered Big Mama’s White Chocolate Raspberry Cheesecake, which was creamy, luxurious, and deeply satisfying in every way, the kind of dessert that makes you close your eyes for a moment just to savor it fully.
