Q&A with Thendara Golf Club Head Professional Rich Chapman

I had a chance to catch up with Rich on Rory’s big win at the Masters, news and notes on Thedara and the game overall and more. Enjoy.

ML: Rory tamed Augusta and finally won the Grand Slam. What was your reaction?

RC: Like many people, I had been anxiously awaiting another opportunity for Rory to complete the Grand Slam. With that being said, what an awesome, epic roller coaster. Some shots were unreal, like his 2nd on 15, and others made you question if it would ever happen, like the 3rd on 13. Then, after he missed the putt on 18 in regulation, I was thinking it was the last US Open all over again. I am thrilled Rory won it and even though the final round had so many ups and downs, I would not have changed a thing.

ML: What’s the biggest day in golf or the biggest event in golf? It has to be the Masters, right?

RC: Especially up here in the North, Masters Sunday is the biggest day in golf. Everyone is getting geared up to play for the season and very excited for the first major of the year. What makes The Masters so special is that we all know every hole at Augusta. It is as close to perfection as a course can get, the last 9 holes on Sunday never disappoint and when it is all said and done, everyone is ready to hit the links!

ML: You know how much I love Thendara. For people who have not been, break it down why it’s so special from your seat.

RC: The front 9 at Thendara was designed by Donald Ross and the back 9 was designed by Russell Bailey, which really makes it two very distinct 9 holes. We do our best to keep the course in immaculate shape, given our parameters of being in the Adirondack Mountains. It also runs along the Moose River, which gives some fantastic scenery. I think we have a very special place because we have done everything to create a real family atmosphere here where everyone can feel at home when they come by. It is something I have worked at for 30+ years and am very proud of what we have accomplished.

ML: When did you fall in love with the game of golf?

RC: I fell in love with the game in high school. I picked it up with a few friends in 11th grade and have enjoyed every round since. The most fun part is sharing the love of the game with other people. And now my kids are getting old enough to really enjoy it too, which has been a dream come true.

ML: What are you most proud of during your time at Thendara GC?

RC: I know I have said it already, however, I am really most proud of the environment we have created here at Thendara. I think everyone feels welcome and part of the family when they step on the grounds and we keep trying to get it better from the customer point of view every year.

ML: Thanks so much and see you soon.

RC: You are very welcome and I look forward to seeing you soon for your annual trip to Thendara!
