The Gem Diner

The name tells you a lot about the place: The Gem!

A “gem,” of course, is a precious stone, and is often used to refer to something that is great, valuable, or outstanding. Synonyms include pearl, jewel, prize and treasure. And gem-like attributes when describing a person would be kind and helpful, valuable and special, positive and good-natured.

And there you have it. Ask a random sampling of Syracusans and Central New Yorkers to describe the popular 50’s style eatery on the west side, and their answers would include those descriptors – and more!

The restaurant opened in 1950 as Doc’s Little Gem Diner, and quickly became a landmark in the area. Known for full plates, fast service, and delicious food, you hadn’t really experienced the city unless you’d had a frettata and an endless cup of hot delicious coffee at The Little Gem.

The diner was purchased in 2011 by Montreal Construction, and operated by Doug LaLone and his wife, Tammy. Current general managers, Anthony LaLone and his wife, Lauren, proudly carry on the traditions that made the place so popular, but have also shown they can “flex” with the times.

“Catering and take-out have both increased,” Anthony LaLone said. “We’re getting a lot of business for family gatherings, or businesses wanting to serve a breakfast or lunch.” He also said that many people like getting a delivery of their favorite lunch, or to stop in and get a takeout order for a quick taste of something only The Gem can offer.

Studying the menu, you’ll find all the best of the American diner experience: burgers and fries, fried fish (a Syracuse must!), breakfasts with every side imaginable, pancakes, a slice of pie, or biscuits and gravy. And you’ll also discover that The Gem has expanded and explored when it comes to your delicious choices, as well. Of course the regional favorites are featured, like Chicken Riggies and Utica Greens. But you’ll find options like a Taco Salad, quesadillas, or deep-fried Texas French Toast. In other words, whatever you’re hungry for, there will be something to match your appetite and taste – and plenty of it.

And you’ll find seasonal specials, along with the occasional special event that reaches out to the larger community. Like Dinner With Santa, a “breakfast for dinner” event featuring a buffet, a visit from Santa, a movie, and crafts. Just for the fun of it!

While patrons will be happy to know that they can serve Gem food at a catered event or house party, and pick up a bag for a delicious lunch at the office or on the road, part of the full Gem experience is visting the diner itself. The Gem offers old-school charm – a classic diner with shiny, stainless steel doors, comfy booths, and counter seating where you can chat with another customer, watch the cooks perform magic, and have a laugh along with your coffee refill.

Whenever you stop in, you’re likely to run into friends and neighbors. And you’re bound to leave having had some of the best All-American diner-delicious food around: great, valuable, and outstanding!
