The season of ice cream truck jingles and warm nights filled with fireflies is upon us. Spending long days outside in the beaming hot sun is what many people look forward to after cold months of wearing layers and protective gear. Outside elements like harsh sun rays, dry weather, and pesky bugs can damage the skin’s barrier, leading to damage and skin irritations.
Everyone should wear sunscreen every day, but in case you forget to lather your skin before stepping out, here are some measures you can take to care for and nourish your skin this summer. I’ve compiled a short list of DIY (do-it-yourself) remedies that can be done by anyone in the comfort of their own home.
Applying sunscreen does not always prevent sunburn and the pain of a sunburn can linger for several days. If you ever get an unbearable burn, try this at home:
Add one cup of colloidal oatmeal (finely ground oats) to your lukewarm baths to help soothe and soften your skin. After adding the oats to the water, let it dissolve and stir it until the water turns milky. Its anti-inflammatory properties are nearly guaranteed to relieve and moisturize any itching or skin irritations you may have. Oats can moisturize and exfoliate the skin, kill bacteria, heal dry patches, and stop peeling. Colloidal oats can be found in lotions, creams, and other skincare products that can be used throughout the year.
Yogurt also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help renew and exfoliate damaged skin. It has lactic acid, which is an organic compound that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by tightening the skin and shrinking pores. Cell growth and regeneration are common with the consistent application of yogurt due to its richness in vitamin B, as it keeps the skin glowing and hydrated. The zinc in yogurt has also been proven to improve skin tone, by removing dark circles and blemishes. To use, just apply to the damaged area and keep the yogurt on for about 15-20 minutes, then rinse off with warm water.
If you are outside this summer, you will probably get a bug bite from a pesky creature you didn’t even see coming. I’ve found aloe vera to be the most effective in treating my bites at home.
Aloe juice or gel can be applied to any bug bite. Take the gel or juice and simply apply it where desired. Aloin, the compound found in the gel stops inflammation, therefore calming any soreness or itching. Similar to oats, aloe is a great moisturizer and can be used for cracked or burned skin. It has been proven useful for skin recovery, and like the other products mentioned above, there is no risk associated with this home remedy. You can purchase aloe in plant form, to grow and use as needed, or you can purchase organic aloe juice or gel at your local grocery store.
