Fashion Comebacks

I’m constantly telling my mother that I wish she had kept all of her clothes from the 80s so that she could pass them down to me. When we go shopping together, I’m always picking things up to show her, saying, “This is cute!” Often the reply I get is, “That looks like something I used to wear.” Of course she got rid of everything that predated the 21st century long ago.

fashion-Romper_suit C’mon mother, couldn’t you have shared the wealth a little with those trendy pieces from decades past? Everything in fashion today seems to just be recycled from years before I was even old enough to know what a trend was. And as these pieces come back into style every so often, it really makes you rethink cleaning your closet out. That fringed bag might be in again when your daughter is 23 years old. Or maybe that gingham jumpsuit will make a comeback in ten years.

I was sifting through racks of clothes the other day on a quick shopping trip with my mother when I found the most comfortable looking heather grey romper. Rompers are everywhere right now – you can just slip them on and you’re out the door. No sweat, super easy fashion. After I pulled it off the rack to show my mom, she just laughed. “That looks like my gym uniform from middle school,” she said.

For the first time, I found myself longing to wear a gym uniform.

I found the perfect acid wash denim jacket at another store a few days before. “I definitely owned that in college,” my mom said. Of course, it’s gone by now, donated or passed down to a friend. Now her closet looks a lot like mine – basic black and grey with plenty of shift dresses and leather.

I wish that snakeskin mini skirt that not only made an appearance in Bowling For Soup’s song 1985, but also in my mother’s wardrobe in the same year, was still hanging in her closet for me to snatch up and show off.fashion-jean-jacket

All of those throwback trends find their way back into our lives in one way or another. Whether it’s the choker necklace (Which I steer clear of. That trend should have never made a comeback.) or overalls, it’s likely what you’re wearing now is going to show up in your favorite stores again in a few years. For this reason, I try to invest in pieces that I know will stand the test of time, but of course my closet can’t hold everything. I guess I will just have to predict what will make an appearance soon enough and what will not when it comes to purging my wardrobe.

In the end, what goes around comes back around.
