Jazzed About Jackets

Put your crop tops away and pull out those beanies from the back of your closet – October is here! It’s time for carving pumpkins and going apple picking and with that comes cozy knits and combat boots. What I’m most excited for this season though, might just be what goes over your outfit.

fashion-person-woman-girlFall jackets this year are to die for. Alexander Wang designed a beautiful black and red plaid wool coat that I would love to layer over all of my neutral pieces for an added edge. The Row took leather to the next level with a long trench-like jacket in olive green. Victoria Beckham stuck with the classic pea coat and modernized it with an oversized fit. And of course, Phillip Lim created an absolutely genius look with a utilitarian green bomber jacket and a fluffy fur neckline.

Sometimes the jacket makes the outfit. Most of my fall days are spent walking from place to place with my jacket on, only shedding it once I’m inside running errands or having meetings. Underneath you can typically count on me wearing jeans or leggings and a draped neutral top with black boots. I keep it simple, very European chic. But I love catching those eyes when I’m walking around, enjoying the fall weather. A stunning jacket is the ultimate outfit topper.

When I’m looking for the perfect jacket, I typically check for three things – texture, fit, and fabric. I think texture can take a simple jacket from boring to beautiful. Fur, suede, leather or fringe will always add a little something extra to your look. As for fit, longer jackets are popular right now, usually something that hits just above the knee. Along with length, the body of the jacket should be loosely fitted, especially if you’re layering on top of bulky sweaters. The fabric is so important. We can get away with cheap leggings or t-shirts, but when it comes to jackets, it’s time to invest. A quality fabric won’t only make you look amazing, it will keep you warm.

So layer yourself up and hit the streets in a gorgeous jacket that represents your style. You’re going to look amazing.
