Nick & Angelo’s will be celebrating their first anniversary this November but the owners and their families are far from new to the Syracuse restaurant scene. The owners Bill LaFluer and John Borchardt are also partners in the Carnegie Catering that is also operating a full service catering company out of Nick & Angelo’s and have had several restaurants around central New York throughout the past two decades. At Nick & Angelo’s diners are treated like family because the restaurant is operated by family. In fact it is named after Bill’s grandson and nephew. Bill’s grandson Nick grew up in the restaurant industry and even worked alongside his mother Nichole and aunt Nichelle. It was only fitting that he should have a restaurant with strong emphasis on family named after him. Without Nick, there wouldn’t have been a “Nick & Angelo’s.”
Kyle and I went to Nick & Angelo’s on a busy Saturday night; luckily we had made reservations and were quickly sat at a cozy booth. We were immediately greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable server, Nichelle, who told us about the daily specials including the risotto of the day. We began our meal with the Fried Calamari —a huge helping of tender calamari rings with a house fra diavolo and Cajun remoulade. Kyle really liked the spice of the Cajun remoulade and I preferred the red fra diavolo. We were then served a huge fresh family style salad loaded with cheese, olives, pepperoncini and homemade croutons and house made dressing and warm, freshly baked crusty Italian bread and homemade garlic butter. This could have been a meal in and of itself and it’s worth noting that it is worth going to Nick & Angelo’s even if it’s just for the salad. -I challenge you to find a better house salad in town! For an entrée I chose the Sicilian Scallops, five gigantic seared scallops with cherry tomatoes, Kalamata olives and shallots simmered in white wine scampi sauce topped with pepperoncini, rings and asiago served over linguine. The scallops were seasoned perfectly and tender and the sauce was the perfect balance of spice and cheese. I highly recommend this dish to scallop lovers. Kyle decided on the Seafood Penne Vodka, penne pasta simmered in spicy vodka cream sauce with lump crab and seared shrimp and scallops. The creamy vodka sauce was loaded with seafood and the penne was the perfect vehicle for the perfect forkful! Nick & Angelo’s does not want anyone to leave hungry and we had several to-go boxes but we just couldn’t pass up dessert. We decided on the homemade lemon coconut torte and the double chocolate Oreo cake. The lemon coconut Torte was light and fluffy perfectly mixing lemon and coconut while the double chocolate Oreo was a chocolate lover’s dream come true.
