Sometimes delicious dreams do come true. Polonaise Premium European Foods opened their doors and their hearts to Syracuse nearly two years ago with the idea of bringing mouthwatering Polish food to Syracuse. Opened by brother and sister team Adam Rozum and Bozena Slota, M.D. they have done that and so much more. They specialize in homemade hot food, a deli counter, and a huge selection of eastern European groceries and beer. Polonaise is open seven days a week and located at 3006 Erie Blvd. East in Syracuse (entrance on Headson Dr.). Come in and try “The United Taste of Polonaise” for yourself.
At Polonaise you will find things that you cannot find anywhere else in Syracuse. They offer a large selection of the best smoked hams and sausages around. If you have never tried true polish sausage and kielbasa you are in for a real treat. The herbs and spices that are used are very unique and distinct from the Italian sausage and ham that you are used to. They also specialize in Russian caviar, smoked fish, and sardines from Latvia. They also always carry goat’s milk. These delicacies are rarely available at chain grocery stores and if they are they carry a gigantic price tag. Polonaise prides themselves on keeping their prices low and keeping items their customers request in stock. If you have a sweet tooth Polonaise can help, they also offer a wide selection of chocolates and sweets from Poland, Ukraine and Russia. You may not know this but Polish chocolate is considered some of the best chocolate in the world. They even have a line of Polish skin care products called Ziaja!
Polonaise has a delicious hot and cold food bar. You can grab lunch and eat inside or outside or take a better than homemade meal home! Most of the dishes are prepared on site, in their beautiful and spotlessly clean industrial kitchen. You have to start with some of their Polish style golabki. Fabulous pierogis are a treat that you won’t find just anywhere. Those pierogis that come frozen in a box have nothing on the real deal. These pierogis are handmade and filled with sauerkraut and mushroom or farmer cheese and potato. The pierogis are all vegetarian. You can also find perfectly seasoned old-world latkes and creamy blintzes, prepared fresh, like grandma used to make! They also bake fresh bread German and Polish style bread on the premise daily. German style bread utilizes very specific ingredients to adhere to German bread laws, and Polonaise happily follows them. They also feature a selection of hot stews and soups. They have a mushroom soup that is rich and creamy and a hunters stew jam packed with kraut, meats, and seasoning. I had the opportunity to sample nearly everything from the bar and I can assure you that every single mouthwatering bite was more delicious than the bite before. I even tasted some of the sausages, perfectly topped with the best mustard I have ever tasted!
The best part of Polonaise is the warm fuzzy feeling that you get when you walk in the door. I heard one customer say that the smells remind him of walking into his grandmother’s house, which always puts a smile on his face. It is decorated with polish art and books to read. The curators of this atmosphere, Adam and Bozena were born and raised in Poland and have done an incredible job of bringing great eastern European foods as well as Polish hospitality to Syracuse. What really sets Polonaise apart from other shops is the knowledgeable and dedicated owners. They are pretty much the nicest and most accommodating people you could ever meet. They speak several languages, including Spanish, which really makes their customers feel right at home. (Interesting side note, a lot of customers are of Cuban descent and the products are familiar because of the soviet occupation.) They also make suggestions, give cooking instructions, and offer samples of just about everything.
