What to Wear to a Job Interview

Last month a woman on Tiktok with the username  , went viral after claiming she was turned away from an interview for wearing shorts. Her shorts were a few inches above her knees but could have easily doubled as the kind one would wear to the beach. She paired a white tank top and sweater with the black shorts, in what she describes as a “neat and professional” way, yet her prospective employer suggested the TikToker go and change her clothes.

This discussion of professionalism caught fire on the social platform, as over 30,000 people poured into her comment section to say they agreed with the employer, and that wearing shorts to a job, let alone a job interview is unacceptable. Still, Tyreshia doubled down in other posts stating that she felt her shorts were not a problem.

Fortunately, the employer offered her a chance to interview at another time, but in most other cases, second chances won’t be given to a person who comes to an interview inappropriately dressed. That is why I want to ensure that you always dress professionally for an interview so that anyone’s impression of you will be that you are capable of any task.

Tip #1

Dress comfortably

Be mindful of the material you put on, and ask yourself, “Could I sit comfortably in this?” Avoid itchy clothing, no matter how fashionable it seems. You want to be able to focus entirely on your interview and show the employer who you are without constantly adjusting your clothing.

Tip #2

Be mindful of the temperature

No matter the temperature outside, you want to make sure that you bring a light sweater with you to an interview. I’ve been in corporate offices that felt like Antarctica, and I shivered the whole time. This too can be distracting during an interview. If you are one to get cold easily and often, do yourself a favor and stay warm.

Tip #3

It is okay to be yourself

Job interviews can be so nerve-wracking, no matter the profession you choose to go into. In wanting to make the best first impression, don’t limit your creativity. Add a pop of color to your outfit and allow your unique style to shine through. Dress for your dream job, and in a way that makes you feel the most confident. Be mindful of the job’s attire and dress accordingly.

Tip #4

Iron your clothes

I do not enjoy ironing my clothes all the time because it’s so drab and time-consuming. Ironing your clothes is still important when going to a job interview. Even though ironing can be annoying, a crisp blouse is unmatched. The clothing tag, usually sewn into the inner lining of every clothing item should have ironing instructions. Read them before you iron so you don’t damage your clothing.

Tip #5

Lay off the fragrance

Someone I know once went to an interview wearing perfume and the interviewer could not stop sneezing because they were allergic to perfume. Be mindful of this when you go into professional spaces, as you don’t want anything getting in the way of your getting that job.
