I caught up with one of the best in the business, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle Bills insider and reporter Sal Maiorana, to preview this season for the Bills.
Expectations are the same as they have been in recent years, bring the Lombardi Trophy to Orchard Park, as the team says farewell to its stadium. Enjoy.
ML: Fairly or unfairly, it’s all about January again heading into the season for the Bills, right Sal?
SM: Yes, it’s completely fair. The Bills are in a Super Bowl window for the next several years as Josh Allen proceeds into his prime. They’ve won the division five years running, they’ve played in two AFC Championship Games. But they haven’t taken the final two steps, first, just getting to the Super Bowl, second, winning it. This team will be judged by what happens in the postseason.
ML: Josh Allen is the MVP. But can he actually be better this season?
SM: It’s asking a lot because the Bills are bringing back most of the same pieces on offense, and opposing defenses are continually gaining experience on how to defend Allen and the Bills. But yes, Allen is outstanding, and he works so hard to improve that it’s entirely possible that he could be better. One thing to watch, though, is the turnover situation. The Bills were incredible last year with just eight turnovers, six Allen picks and two Allen fumbles. It’s hard to have that much luck two years in a row.
ML: Major takeaway or two from Training Camp?
SM: The Bills have made impressive upgrades to their defensive line, but now these new guys have to prove the Bills made the right call. Three free agents led by Joey Bosa, and three draft picks in the first four rounds up front is a big investment that they need to reap some reward from. However, the secondary is a little shaky right now. Tre’Davious White is not the same player he once was, and the safety tandem of Cole Bishop and Taylor Rapp has missed a lot of time in camp because of injuries. They need to get that buttoned up quick.
ML: Last year of the stadium. Favorite memories for you?
SM: Oh, I have so many. But as a fan, the 1980 season opener when they ended the Dolphins losing streak at 20 games was an all-time for me to be there. And then while covering the team, the comeback game, of course, but I still say the greatest moment in that stadium was the 1990 AFC Championship Game when they annihilated the Raiders 51-3. Unforgettable in every way, because it also meant the Bills were finally going to the Super Bowl.
ML: One on offense. One on defense. Guys who must step up for this team.
SM: On offense, Dalton Kincaid. He’s a 2023 first-round pick who has not delivered on the promise, though an injury ruined his 2024 season. On defense, Greg Rousseau got his contract extended, and now he needs to become an elite edge rusher. He’s been good across four years, but he needs to take it to a new level.
ML: Thanks Sal. Continued success.
SM: Thanks Mike, always a pleasure.
