Black-Owned Brands That You Must Try

Happy Black History Month! As monthly festivities are fully underway, I figured it would be fun to highlight some Black-owned beauty brands.

Firstly, Black-owned brands are important. Society benefits from innovative ideas that come from people of all backgrounds. There are answers to issues that other people have that I just simply do not. Each of us can bring a wealth of experience and knowledge in our unique way, thus presenting solutions to problems that one may have never thought of. Everyone benefits from this.

Despite this, Black business owners have historically faced disparities in the support and VC funding they receive. Ultimately, these discriminatory financial practices are costing America millions of dollars in national income and missing jobs.

As we focus on these brands and their founders this month, it is important to know that diversity matters in every space.

One of my favorite brands is The Lip Bar, which was founded and launched by Melissa Butler. I have mainly used their lipglosses and have not been disappointed. Their glosses provide such a velvety application and are long-lasting. They work well for a wide range of skin tones and have a range of products for every complexion. Their complexion quiz will guide you to the products that are perfect for you, including lip tones that compliment your skin tone.

I have recently discovered Haiama Beauty, a beauty brand based in Philadelphia. Founder, Allison Shimamoto is passionate about sustainable and clean products, that are good for the body but are also not harmful to the planet. I have been using their Cupuaçu and Kokum Cream. This cream can be applied to the hair and body. I love how the cream easily absorbs into the skin and hair. It is also so lightweight but not watered down; it is so moisturizing and rich. Most importantly, her products are raw and have no fillers or toxins. If you are looking for an eco-luxury beauty brand to try, you do not want to miss this one.

As a journal and planner junkie, I am always down for more. Last summer, I was gifted a journal from Be Rooted, a cultural brand that infuses Black culture into planners, journals, home goods, and desk items. This brand demonstrates representation and cultural appreciation.

I have tried these brands and each of them offers quality service and products. Supporting Black-owned businesses is not just a once-a-year thing but should be explored all year long. If you want to elevate your beauty and self-care routines, these are the brands to try.
