Syracuse isn’t a big city, and it’s not a small town.
It has the advantages of a more compact, easy-to-navigate community where chances are you know your neighbors, and you can make that appointment across town in fifteen minutes.
But we sometimes don’t pay attention to the ways in which this town gives us the benefits of a larger city. Universities, medical complexes, parks and a zoo. And splendid downtown dining!
And that’s what Downtown Dining Weeks is all about – celebrating the creative culinary talent of our city, and the many and varied customers who enjoy it.
“This is the 22nd year of Downtown Dining Weeks, and the mission of the event hasn’t changed – but even longtime diners can look forward to some enticing new offerings among the 50+ participating restaurants in the lineup, as well as their trusted and true favorites,” said Becca Flint, Community Engagement & Relations Specialist for the Downtown Committee.
Looking at the extensive list of eateries, the hardest part of the event is narrowing your options down to “where will we go today?”
If you can’t get away from the winter, bring the beaches of the Caribbean to you at Isla, where you’ll find the food and drinks of the warm Islands to the south – Chicken Skewers with Mango Chile Glaze, or Puerto Rican style Lasagna with Ripe Plantain, for example. Or stop in at Erma’s Bistro for some carefully crafted Signature Rasta Pasta, Creole Snapper, or Curry Chicken Roti. Popular long-time Italian style Pastabilities brings you all your favorites like Chicken Puttenesca, Fra Diavolo Shrimp Scampi, and Chicken Parmesan, along with their own home-baked stretch Italian bread and legendary Spicy Hot Tomato Oil over pasta! Or if you’re in the mood for barbeque, you have to stop in at Dinosaur Bar-b-que and load up your plate with some of the best pulled pork, cornbread, ribs and sides this side of heaven.
And those are just 4 of the 50+ tempting tastes for you to experience. And, of course, many venues offer specialty themed drinks, and many offer gluten-free dining options, as well. Check the website for the full list of restaurants and menus!
In a climate like the northeast’s, it’s easy to get in the habit of closing the door on the winter. But every time you get out, whether it’s lunch, dinner, or a mid-afternoon treat at a coffee shop, you wind up glad you buttoned up your coat.
So don’t hesitate – with friends to meet, a new taste to try out, a “working” lunch or a relaxing dinner to enjoy, you get the benefit of “prix fixe” prices, and restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and cafes, all eager to show you just how delightful dining out can be!
“And be sure to let people know that we have a parking map on the website,” added Flint. “It makes everything much easier!”
