How to Elevate Your Thrifting Experience

Donning the aisle of thrift stores has grown increasingly popular across the country in recent years. The concept started in ancient communities where bartering and exchanging repurposed goods were common practice. Thrift stores emerged in the 19th century when people donated their items to charitable organizations. Now, it has grown into a billion-dollar industry for everyone to partake in. Here are some tips to make your thrift shopping a great experience.

1. It’s About the Journey

In my experience, the best treasures aren’t usually found with a quick “drop in.” Going on your off days from work or when you have time to pass will allow you to explore the store at your own pace. Each store has its own character, so enjoy it. The vast selection of styles and sizes can feel overstimulating for some. I’ve found myself intrigued by the clothes but also by imagining the stories of those who once owned them. Getting to the store when it first opens help guarantee that you’ll be the first to see some of its best treasures.

2. Shop Around

No thrift store is identical, and each community has its own offerings. Stores near affluent communities can appeal to people looking for high end pieces for a fraction of its retail price. I’ve often found brand new clothes with its original tags, and gently used luxury coats. Explore the shops in different communities to find your favorite spots. I would also suggest venturing into other sections of the stores as well. Many second-hand stores can have textbooks, jewelry and home decor. You can save money by getting those items from a thrift store instead of paying full price elsewhere.

3. Be Picky

Going to a second-hand store can feel like shopping at any other store – you go in with a modest budget, but leave with a bill higher than you anticipated. I would urge you to consider the kinds of items you want first, before just showing up. In our consumer culture it’s so easy to get caught in the loophole of buying something because it’s “cheap.” Don’t just buy things for its low cost, but think sustainably and about what you need and how it adds to what you have already.

4. Inspect Your Pieces

Second-hand items can have small damages. It is important to look over the items that catch your eye before buying them. Be mindful of any odor that could be in the clothing, and also of each item’s texture. There are some thrift stores that have strict no-return policies so you can save yourself the hassle of regret by making sure your items are in good condition.

5. Find a Tailor and Make Them Your Bestie

Having a tailor to make changes to the clothes you buy can also help you save money in the long run. If by chance you notice a piece of clothing you see in the store has any sort of damage, but you still want to purchase it, having a handy sewing kit at home will also be helpful.

Happy Thrifting!
