Spring Into Action This May for National Physical Fitness Month

Did you know that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month? An annual observance, National Physical Fitness and Sports Month aims to highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle and raises awareness about the importance of being active. It’s a chance for us to celebrate and encourage participation in all forms of physical activity, from organized sports to everyday activities.

Here is a not so fun fact. More than a quarter of the world’s adult population doesn’t meet the recommended levels of physical activity. Are you a part of the population? Physical activity is crucial for good health and well-being, regardless of age, fitness level, or body type. Even individuals with disabilities or limitations can find activities that benefit their health.

What are the benefits of staying physically active?

Staying physically active offers numerous benefits for your physical and mental well-being. Regular physical activity can improve cardiovascular health, reduce the risk of chronic diseases, boost mood, and enhance overall quality of life. Consistent exercise has numerous benefits, including boosting energy levels, strengthening bones, muscles, and joints, and reducing the risk of falls.

How can you move more?                                                                                                                                  To boost daily movement, incorporate small, manageable changes into your routine like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking farther away from your destination, and taking short movement breaks throughout the day. These simple adjustments can add up to significant health benefits over time. It’s true that not everyone is naturally motivated to exercise, and sometimes a little inspiration is needed to get started or stay on track. Finding a motivating instructor, setting goals, finding a workout buddy, celebrating small wins, and understanding your “why” can all be helpful.

Remember that fitness, exercise, and movement look different for everyone and it’s not a one-size-fits-all. What works for one person might not work for another, so finding a personalized approach is key! Here are some tips to help you get started.

Try a Virtual Workout

Virtual workouts are convenient, affordable, and offer a variety of activities. They can be particularly beneficial for those of you who struggle with motivation, lack time, or prefer to exercise at home. Using virtual workouts through apps, podcasts, and streaming services is an excellent way to diversify your fitness routine and stay motivated. With a wide range of options from live-streamed classes to on-demand videos, it’s easy to find a format and style that suits your preferences and fitness goals.

Participate in a Group Fitness Class

Group fitness classes offer a fun and effective way to get in shape and stay motivated, providing accountability through the shared experience and encouragement of others. When you’re a regular, you’ll feel like part of the family and surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who share similar fitness goals can create a strong sense of camaraderie. Many gyms offer a variety of fitness classes that are included with your membership. Taking advantage of these can enhance your workout routine and provide a more well-rounded experience.

Sign Up for a Road Race

Running is the perfect way to actively enjoy the outdoors, and May is a great month to get out there and start making miles. To keep yourself motivated, sign up for a road race. Countless businesses and organizations throughout the United States sponsor road race events in the spring and summer. Memorial Day weekend is an especially favorite time for these kinds of activities. Look for something local. If you are just getting into running, a 5K is a great place to start. If you’ve been running for a while, test your boundaries with a 10k, half-marathon, or marathon.

Join a Local Sports Group

Getting into fitness can be a terrific way to meet people and make new friends. Look for a sports group, team, or league near you that appeals to your talents and interests. Depending on where you live, you may have a wide range of options available to you. The social interaction, encouragement, and the shared experience of working together can help you stick to your fitness goals more effectively. Yes, even when life gets in the way.

Pick Out a Cool Place to Hike

Sometimes, getting active can be as simple as taking a walk in the park. Check out some cool hiking spots nearby and set aside some time during the week or on the weekend for a hike. Recreational trails, nature reserves, and national parks offer various benefits and opportunities. There are no wrong answers here!

Bike to Work for The Month

If possible, pledge to bike to work for the whole month of May. Not only is this kind of commitment a fantastic way to get your daily dose of exercise, but it’s also an effective way to significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Bikes emit minimal carbon emissions (around 0.07 pounds/mile), while private vehicles emit 0.96 pounds/mile. This makes cycling a more sustainable mode of transportation, especially for short to moderate commutes. You don’t necessarily have to bike to work every day, but challenging yourself to do it a few times a week will honor the spirit. Hey, you might even encourage your co-workers to get involved.

Get Active with Friends and Family

Next time you get together with friends or family, skip dessert or the trip to the bar and arrange a physical activity. A bike ride on a local nature trail, a few games of volleyball, or a friendly game of softball all sound good to me. These activities provide a mix of social interaction and exercise, offering a fun and engaging way to spend time with loved ones.

In Conclusion:

During National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, we can all shine a spotlight on the importance of a more active lifestyle in maintaining our nation’s health and wellness. Physical activity is good for everyone’s health, and people of all ages, fitness levels, and body types can participate.

The primary goal of National Physical Fitness and Sports Month isn’t to coerce people into exercise, but rather to encourage them to find enjoyable activities that they will want to continue doing, even after the month is over. Just remember to have fun. Good luck to you.
